I am conducting research to complete the requirement for my doctorate degree. I would like your help, I do not have any gifts or compensation available for completing this survey. The purpose of my research is to identify what citizens and probation officers perceive to be reasonable force options when responding to different resistance levels from a juvenile offender.
Furthermore, it is important to attempt to identify any link between citizen perceptions of law enforcement and their views about use of force situations. This information can help the Probation Department to conduct better community outreach. Understanding these perception issues will help in improving training, policy, community relations, and management decision processes.
The survey instrument is online and has three sections demographic, scenario, and threat seriousness. The survey will ask you to check a box indicating if you are a citizen or a sworn officer. The survey will then ask basic demographic information such as age, race, gender, education, and income.
The next sections of the survey include video scenarios where you answer questions about the force used in the scenarios, and whether you believe the response depicted was reasonable or not. Finally, you will be asked to rank the seriousness of an attack by a juvenile on an officer.
You will not be asked for your name or any identifying information. You may stop filling out the survey at any time, without any consequences. However, the survey must be completed in its entirety for your answer to be recorded. Since this survey is completely anonymous and there is no specific identifying personal information being gathered, I am not able to withdraw your information after you have submitted your survey. Again, your answers will only be recorded once you have successfully completed the survey in its entirety.
The survey should take no more than 10 to 15 minutes to complete.
There may be minimal risk to this study as you are going to view scenarios where a juvenile suspect is having force used on their person, if at any point, you feel uncomfortable in completing this survey please stop and exit the survey.
