Officers who persevere will overcome adversity
A quote by Dr. Charles Heiss (2015) attempts to summarize a perspective of law enforcement officer use-of-force “There is no nice way to arrest a potentially dangerous, combative suspect. Law enforcement officers are our bodyguards, our-hired fist, batons, and guns. Society pays them to do the dirty work of protecting us. The work that we in society are too afraid, too unskilled, or too civilized to do ourselves. We expect them to keep the bad guys out of business, out of our cars, out of our houses, and out of our faces. We don’t want to see how it’s done.”
The Juvenile Force Perception (JFP) is a website and survey which is dedicated to the understanding of reasonable force on juvenile offenders. Public opinions impact law and policy. It is important that internal policy makers consider the public’s perceptions of reasonable force toward juvenile residents in the juvenile correction system. The purpose of this survey is to explore differences between civilians’ and institution probation officers’ understanding of reasonable use-of-force situations on juvenile offenders. Understanding how the public views the use-of-force interactions between intuitional officers and the juveniles in custody is crucial in improving the relationship between probation officers and the community.
With education, research, and training JFP strives to close the perception gap between the community and officers concerning reasonable use-of-force with juvenile offenders.
Thank you for your time and participating in this survey.
